Hale Paahoa Museum - Hawaii
Lahaina, Maui, HI
Hale Paahao, "the stuck-in-irons house," was so named because of its standard wall shackles and ball-and-chain restraints. The prison house was built of planks in 1852. There were separate quarters for men and women and a catwalk which allowed a guard to patrol the grounds. Most prisoners were incarcerated for deserting ship, drunkenness, working on the Sabbath or reckless horse
